UNFPA East and Southern Africa Regional Office and the Department of Women in the Presidency of the Republic of South Africa co-hosted the first East and Southern African Symposium on Menstrual Health Management from 28 to 29 May 2018 in Johannesburg, South Africa. We are proud to share this new Guidance on Monitoring Menstrual Health and Hygiene by UNICEF, which we contributed to. The purpose of this guide is to support the development and/or improvement of Menstrual Health and Hygiene monitoring, by highlighting basic principles (including ethical considerations) and example questions to monitor the various elements of MHM. The questions and the wider guidance are not intended to be comprehensive or prescriptive; rather, they represent practical suggestions for monitoring Menstrual Health and Hygiene, based on sector experiences and the best available information at the time of publication.

This position paper was informed by lessons from various sources, specifically from the virtual dialogue organized by UNFPA, Days for Girls and the Menstrual Health Responses to the COVID-19 Pandemic in Africa - What Have We Learnt?.
In this Decade of Action, the dialogue brought all menstrual health stakeholders to review issues, challenges and opportunities amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in Africa.
